The original North American cable is approximately 3090 mm long, and the original upper cable is about 210 mm long giving an original total length of about 3300 mm. This cable will replace the original lower & upper assembly, but the housing will not fit into the housing hook on the thermostat housing AND will not fit into the two retaining hooks inside the car in front of the accelerator pedal assembly. It will work as just the lower assembly, but will be a bit long...
To install, first remove the Allen head bolts retaining the speedometer & gauge assemble into the dash, and disconnect the two cable parts in the left front cowl area. Work the gauge assemble back towards the steering wheel & remove the short upper cable assemble along with it's rubber grommet thru the wall. Then remove the lower cable assemble along with all the hole rubber grommets.
Put the new cable in the front trunk & then feed the rear part of the cable into the interior and then under the carpet and out under the car thru the hole in the floor leaving most of the cable under the car. Work the upper part of the cable thru the hole into the cowl area, and then thru the hole into the area behind the gauges. Attach the cable to the back of the speedometer head (the clip on cable end will attach to the early 1979 speedometers with screw on cables), and work the gauge assembly back into it's home in the dash with your right hand while working the cable into the front trunk with your left. Work the excess cable down into the interior & out the floor.
Under the car, work the end of the cable thru the eyelet into the area in front of the transaxle and attach the cable end to the drive on the transaxle. With the car securely in the air, start the motor, select a gear, and confirm the speedometer works. If needed, adjust the location of the cable in the cowl area to get rid of any cable noise, and install the Allen head screws. Turn off the car.
Work the cable housing near the thermostat so it does not interfere with the clutch operation but is as low as possible, and then 'hang' with a zip tie between the housing and the original hook on the thermostat. Slip the cable into the clips under the car and again confirm speedometer operation. In the car the cable will not fit against the forward bulkhead in the area in front of the accelerator pedal assembly, but confirm it will not get into your way when operating your car & secure if needed. For me, the carpet placed back where it's supposed to be works fine. Install all the rubber protectors & your done.
