Chris,

I get the news letter and love it! Keep it coming.

I have a 1982 Fiat Spider I have restored and it runs well except just recently I am getting a loud sound from the under neath (Driveshaft or rear end) on acceleration. Not on coasting.

It is a grinding, crunching, wirring type noise. Not all the time, but mostly all the time. I have checked the rear wheels for excessive play (outer bearings) and leaking oil and they were fine.

My pillow block has tons of play, the shaft can go up and down about 1/2 inch at the pillow block. IS that normal????? How does one know if a pillow block needs replacement?? Do you sell them?

The driveshaft center support should have only the movement of the rubber in it. Lots of play means it has probably failed. You should change the center support bearing and at least one of the u-joints at the same time. And yes, of course, we sell them.

Will you replace it if I mail the assembly??

If you want to send me your entire driveshaft, I can replace it ....

Should I dis-assemble my rear end instead and look further there first?

Please read the shop manual to understand what is involved to put your differential back together, it might be more than you have the tools for!
